ABOUT WM. J. MILLS & CO.Ā

Wm. J. Mills & Co. is America's oldest sailmaker, founded in 1880 to service the commercial whaling and oyster ships of Greenport, New York.Ā With the introduction of steam and gasoline powered engines, William J. Mills recognized that the days of a commercial fleet powered by sails were short lived. While continuing to make sails for sailing yachts of the rich, the family business diversified by making canvas awnings for homes and businesses.

With the continued rise in motorized boats, William J. Mills II (Bill) moved the company into custom marine canvas work. The high-quality of Bill's work led to the start of Wm. J. Mills & Co.'s partnership with Boston WhalerĀ® and a friendship between Bill and Dick Fisher, the founder of Boston WhalerĀ® boats (see photo).Ā

Dick, famous as a perfectionist, needed a canvas company as dedicated to quality as he was. Bill Mills designed innovative canvas solutions never seen before on boats of that era. They included a complete enclosure on small boats that protected the occupants from the elements.

Wm. J. Mills & Co. was the sole supplier of canvas for Boston WhalerĀ® for more than 40 years.

Wm. J. Mills & Co. is currently owned and operated by the sixth generation of the Mills family. It remains renowned for its craftsmanship, durability, and design.Ā

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
Ā

Boston WhalerĀ® is our most buoyant partnership yet: unsinkable, in fact, and famously so. Since the 1950s, The Unsinkable Legendā„¢ has been integral to countless memories on the water. Among them are some of our own: Tombolo grew up with Boston Whalers and learned to love the water from the faded Whaler Blue deck of a 1974 '13 Sport.

Part I of our ongoing partnership with Boston Whaler featured a 16 foot Whaler from the 1960s that Tombolo rescued from a yard on Shelter Island, New York. The boat, named ā€œCea Pea,ā€ had seen better days after manyĀ years of neglect. Unassuming Cea Pea became the backdrop of the Part I photoshoot in all of herĀ dilapidated glory.Ā For Part II, Boston Whaler and Tombolo upped the ante: along with 18 new items (and the returnĀ of select best sellers from Part I), Cea Pea has been reborn and reimagined after a painstakingĀ restoration. She looks as buoyant and beautiful as ever at over 50 years old, stealing the show as the centerpiece of this ongoing partnership.
